If you know me, you know I am PICKY about the resources I use in my practice. The MOTAS (ages 5+) and MOTAS-EL (ages 0-5) are my absolute favorite assessment tools.
Here's why:
First, they're neurodiversity-affirming! Developed with input from autistic individuals, these assessments reflect a more respectful, strengths-based approach to understanding and supporting autistic learners. Rather than focusing solely on deficits or trying to make individuals appear more neurotypical, they emphasize meaningful skills that support autonomy, independence, and quality of life.
Another feature I LOVE about the MOTAS-EL is that it identifies the developmental ages at which skills typically emerge. This provides valuable context when assessing early learners and helps clinicians establish developmentally appropriate expectations and goals.
I also appreciate that these tools encourage us to be intentional about what we're assessing and teaching, rather than simply checking off skills on a list.
Assessment should be about understanding the learner, instead of just identifying what they can't do.
